Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) in partnership with Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) Cumming School of Medicine (CSM), University of Calgary (UofC) are seeking a full time Academic Pediatric/Perinatal Anatomical Pathologist. Applicants with certification in anatomical or general (anatomical/clinical) pathology, fellowship training and experience in Pediatric/Perinatal Pathology may apply.

The successful candidate will join a team of 95+ laboratory physicians and scientists working mostly at an acute care institution.  APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services.  APL (Calgary Zone) processes 30+ million tests, 260,000 surgical specimens, 200,000 gynecologic cytology specimens, and 10,000 non-gynecologic cytology specimens annually.

The-pediatric-perinatal pathology group is based at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH), which provides surgical pathology and autopsy services for the hospital, perinatal autopsy/placental pathology services for the city, and consultative services for southern Alberta.  High volumes of placentas (~4,000/year) and perinatal autopsies (>200/year), as well as active clinical and basic research groups, support perinatal pathology research opportunities. Practice specialization in perinatal pathology and leadership opportunities are possible. The successful candidate must have the ability to work in a setting with a similar case complexity. Participation in a pediatric anatomic pathology on-call rotation is expected.

APL is a publically funded wholly owned subsidiary corporation of Alberta Health Services (AHS), and is party to an affiliation agreement with the UofC.  The DPLM and APL offer residency training programs in Anatomic Pathology, General Pathology, Neuropathology and Medical Microbiology, as well as Fellowship training in subspecialty areas within Anatomic Pathology (including pediatric-perinatal pathology), Hematopathology and Clinical Biochemistry.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

Pathologists must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established key performance indicators and provincial metrics, must actively participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, and must actively participate in undergraduate, graduate, and  postgraduate medical teaching. This is a joint UofC / APL academic position (50/50 split academic/clinical)

Minimum qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta with certification in Anatomic Pathology / Clinical Pathology or General Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the American Board of Pathology or equivalent qualification for applicants outside of North America, as well as subspecialty Fellowship training and/or Certification in Pediatric and/or Perinatal Pathology.
