Description:

The position will have 75% protected time for research, which will be conducted within the Calvin, Phoebe and Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases at the University of Calgary Health Sciences Centre. The Department of Medicine and Snyder Institute provide a rich environment in which the candidate can lead and collaborate in basic, translational and/or clinical research. The successful candidate will lead an interdisciplinary microbial therapeutics program that includes fecal microbial transplants within the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and in partnership with Alberta Health Services. This position provides an opportunity for an outstanding researcher to continue to grow an active research program in microbial therapeutics and grow a microbial transplant program. The Chair will be expected to engage actively with researchers and clinicians within the UCalgary International Microbiome Centre, as well as the broader community within the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services.  The Chair will benefit from and contribute to a growing community of scientists focused on the microbiome and microbial therapeutics at the University of Calgary. Substantive start-up funds will provide the Chair with resources to successfully leverage and galvanize existing initiatives at the University of Calgary into a world class centre for microbial therapeutics. 

The selected candidate will be nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Microbial Therapeutics.  Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website (https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/home-accueil-eng.aspx) including eligibility criteria.

If the successful candidate is a clinician scientist (MD), duties will include providing clinical care to patients with GI issues, with a focus on fecal microbial transplants. A successful MD candidate would be expected to focus 25% of their time on clinical care and 75% time on research related activities, as well as participate in teaching at the University of Calgary in undergraduate, graduate and/or postgraduate clinical and academic programs. 

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Canadian Tri-Council or equivalent peer-reviewed National/International organization) research program focused on microbial therapeutics, and a strong publication record that reflects their experience in basic, translational and/or clinical trials research. Evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, National/International research collaborations, and experience creating, and leading interdisciplinary teams are all required.

Applicants at the Professor level must present evidence of a well-established, externally funded (at the level of Canadian Tri-Council or equivalent peer-reviewed National/International organization) research program focused on microbial therapeutics, and an extensive impactful publication record that reflects their experience in basic, translational and/or clinical trials research. Evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, National/International research collaborations, and experience creating, and leading large interdisciplinary teams are all required.

Qualifications:

Qualifications required include a PhD (or equivalent research training) +/- an MD.  Clinician Scientist (MD) applicants also require certification in Internal Medicine and sub-specialty certification in Gastroenterology.  


The Clinician Scientist (MD) candidates must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
