PRIMARY CARE ALBERTA: Medical Director, Public Health & Preventive Medicine Lead

Primary Care Alberta (PCA) invites applications for the role of Medical Director, Public Health & Preventive Medicine Lead within the Provincial Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC).

This is a flexible 0.4–0.6 FTE medical leadership role (approximately 800–1,200 hours per year, negotiable), governed by the applicable Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, and reporting to the Senior Medical Director, Indigenous Wellness Core.

This position is grounded in the Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness and guided by the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action. The role is intended to advance Indigenous self‑determination and strengthen Indigenous physician leadership in public health and preventive medicine at a provincial level.

Role Summary

Working alongside Indigenous leaders, communities, and partners across Alberta, the successful candidate will provide provincial medical leadership in public health and preventive medicine to advance Indigenous health equity.

The role focuses on population health, disease and injury prevention, health promotion, health protection, and culturally grounded, relationship‑based engagement with Indigenous communities. This position offers meaningful flexibility, mentorship, and professional development support, particularly for physicians developing into senior medical leadership roles.

Key Accountabilities

In a culturally safe, relational, and collaborative manner, the Medical Director will:

·       Provide provincial strategic leadership to improve the health and well‑being of Indigenous peoples, aligned with the Roadmap to Wellness

·       Apply public health and preventive medicine expertise to population health assessment, Indigenous health equity, and community‑informed health promotion

·       Partner with Indigenous communities and leadership in a spirit of respect, reciprocity, and shared decision‑making

·       Collaborate with IWC Innovation and Research teams to address social determinants of health and evaluate population‑level interventions

·       Champion quality improvement initiatives and support research and evaluation approaches that reflect Indigenous ways of knowing

·       Support physician education, mentorship, and leadership development, including for Indigenous physicians and learners

·       Work collaboratively with PCA Population and Public Health, medical and operational leaders, and cross‑sector partners to advance Indigenous‑led provincial priorities

·       Promote a culture of safety, advocate for high‑quality, anti‑racist care, and amplify Indigenous voices within PCA

·       Fulfill relevant clinical duties aligned with Indigenous health and public health practice, as appropriate to scope and interest
