The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for a Neurologist Quality Improvement Clinician Educator to be based at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.
The Division of Neurology comprises 60 neurologists in academic and community practice and 3 Scientists. Internationally recognized research is conducted and published from UA. All subspecialties of neurology are represented among the faculty in addition to stroke including: Autoimmune and Multiple Sclerosis, Cognitive Neurology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular and ALS, Autonomic Neurophysiology, Headache Clinic. We have five research chairs within our division. Neurology holds multiple CIHR, NIH, PCORI and other prestigious external grants. Our Neurology residency program is strong and accepts 5-6 residents/year. We have vital clinical and research fellowship programs in most subspecialties of Neurology.
The Kaye Edmonton Clinic and University of Alberta Hospital are an active academic neurology centre, recognized nation-wide and internationally for academic medicine contributions. The academic division has close ties to the University of Alberta Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), a discovery and translational research collaborative. The educational program in Neurology spans all levels of medical education, from first-year medical students, residents, graduate students, and comprehensive fellowship programs. The Division has a highly ranked, active residency training program. In the delivery of clinical care and education, the Division is ably supported by a large, committed, and collaborative group of community-based neurologists.
Our division is seeking to expand our academic and clinical mission, particularly in the areas of undergraduate and post-graduate medical education, with expectations of undertaking education scholarship and teaching about quality improvement in neurology. The successful candidate will have an MD degree and certification in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. He or she will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate should have advanced training and expertise in a subspecialty of neurology, having completed at least one year of subspecialty fellowship training in a recognized subspecialty program (including but not limited to stroke, MS & neuroinflammatory Diseases, EMG and neuromuscular diseases, epilepsy, cognitive/dementia etc). A master’s degree in medical education is preferred, or if a candidate has not completed a master’s degree in medical education, they should display willingness and agree to commit to completing a master’s degree in medical education as an expectation of employment as the successful candidate.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an MD degree, or equivalent. They will be eligible to be certified in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. As well, they will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate should have advanced training and expertise in a recognized subspecialty of neurology of at least 1 year of subspecialty fellowship training. A master’s degree in medical education is preferred, or if candidate has not completed a master’s degree in medical education, they should display willingness and agree to commit to completing a master’s degree in medical education as an expectation of employment as the successful candidate. They should have had teaching experience and training in quality improvement.
Key accountabilities of the position will include, but will not be limited to, participation in divisional meetings, retreats and initiatives, neurology inpatient services, and calls on a rotating roster. The successful candidate will be expected to be very involved in educating residents and students – classroom and bedside, OSCE development and participation, and to aid in coordinating rotational experience for trainees. This individual would be expected to be a lead for education in neurology at the University of Alberta, participating in, applying for, and being in leadership positions in education undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs. If they have not completed a Master of Medical Education, they will be expected to enroll and do so after hire. They will participate fully in the education programs in Neurology at the University of Alberta and University of Alberta Hospital, as well as participate in or lead clinical research and/or quality improvement programs. The successful candidate will be leading quality improvement training and teaching of trainees in Neurology about neurology quality improvement initiatives and approach in the healthcare setting. They will provide clinical expertise in their area of neurology subspecialty. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Clinical Lecturer, Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Full Professor at the University of Alberta with the academic position description of Clinician Teacher (CT), Clinician in Quality and Innovation (CQI), Clinician-Investigator (CI), or Clinician Scientist (CS). The successful candidate will support outpatient demands and inpatient consultations. The successful candidate will report to the Divisional Director of Neurology at the University of Alberta and the Edmonton Zone Lead of Neurology for AHS.
The successful candidate will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Alternative Relationship Plan (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
