Description:

Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone, Department of Rural Medicine is inviting applications from physicians to provide anesthesia services at Canmore General Hospital starting in January 2025.

Canmore General Hospital is a community hospital with 21 acute care beds and 23 long term care beds.  The operating room is active five days per week with general surgery, and vascular surgery comprising the bulk of the elective work.  Local itinerant surgeons support Canmore's surgical program which performs almost 2,000 day surgeries and over 70 inpatient surgeries per year.  There is a list of exclusions and mandatory consultations for fitness for surgery in Canmore.  The accepted risk scores are moderate.

The local obstetrical program is supported by both family medicine physicians and OBGYNs.  Canmore General Hospital delivers 250 babies per year; epidural uptake is 67%.  Elective and emergency C-Sections comprise close to 50% of total deliveries (about 30% in the last 3 years).  Response time to E0 C-Sections is no more than 20 minutes.

The current rota is 21 days.  Each of the 3 anesthetists have 5 elective days and 7 call days.  Each elective day is also after hours call day.  There is one weekend call in the 21 day call cycle.  The department is small and collegiality is vital to its function.

The successful applicant must reside in and have their primary residence within the community of Canmore.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must have CCFP (FPA) or equivalent or FRCPC in Anesthesia (or equivalent).

Demonstrate ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team; strong interpersonal communication skills, and a strong commitment to delivering safe anesthetic care. 

Applicants must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Must read, write, and speak English.
