Primary Care Alberta is seeking a visionary medical leader with rural health delivery experience to champion access to care in rural communities in the role of Associate Chief Medical Officer – Rural (ACMO). The ACMO will lead physician engagement and provide strategic advice and direction on rural primary care issues, needs, and initiatives.
 

This 0.4-0.5 FTE provincial leadership position can be located anywhere within Alberta and is eligible for a remote/hybrid work arrangement.

The Associate Chief Medical Officer – Rural (ACMO) provides expert guidance on rural primary care issues, needs, and initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, this leadership role engages physicians and Primary Care Alberta (PCA) partners, offering a rural perspective across all Chief Medical Officer projects. The ACMO is responsible for developing and implementing a sustainable approach to rural health care delivery, addressing recruitment, retention, engagement, access, and system navigation. The role involves shaping and promoting a clear vision for rural primary care, setting strategic direction, prioritizing initiatives, and leading their execution to achieve measurable outcomes. The ACMO directs medical engagement to inform the design and rollout of policies, tools, and strategies that ensure equitable support for PCA initiatives with a rural lens. Effective communication skills are essential to foster transparent, respectful engagement with physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health providers. The ACMO also advises stakeholders and leads consultation with medical staff on portfolio processes and policies, including transitions and management of Regional Primary Care Networks, ensuring rural needs and experiences are reflected

 
Qualifications:
 

The successful candidate will be eligible for independent medical licensure in Alberta, including certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent professional body. The ACMO is expected to obtain and maintain a Medical Staff appointment.
 

At least four years’ leadership experience in health care is desired, ideally in a multi-clinic or geographically diverse and dispersed context. Experience in rural healthcare delivery is required.

 
Experience leading, supporting and assisting in development of medical leaders and experience
leading quality & healthcare improvement programs or initiatives.
  
 Additional Required Qualifications:

The new ACMO will possess a successful record of achievement in strategic planning  This individual will have a demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. Other skills include being an effective communicator with strong organizational skills, client-focused orientation, and commitment to providing long term quality services. They can foster partnerships and achieve organizational goals within a large and complex organization.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in leadership and development including the design, development, and evaluation of policies, as well as tools and strategies to support this work.
 
Achieving the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential is an asset.
