Alberta Health Services’ Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) is looking for a culturally aware Associate Medical Director to co-lead the development of structures, processes and organizational culture needed to respond to Indigenous peoples’ unique needs at the provincial, zone, and program level with a driving vision of achieving health equity for and with Indigenous Peoples in Alberta.

Job Description

 

The Associate Medical Director (AMD) is a key leadership role within the provincial Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC). The Associate Medical Director supports the Senior Medical Director (SMD) in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the overall strategic and operational plans in support of patient focused care programs and delivery through the Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC). Together with the SMD, this includes developing the business plan for IWC in collaboration with the SMD, and establishing priorities, a workforce plan and assist in developing strategies methods, and incentives to successfully implement the goals and actions outlined in the Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness.

 

The Associate Medical Director collaborates with provincial leadership and other key stakeholders to develop and empower the IWC in an integrated service delivery organization. The AMD provides provincial support to the Zone Medical Leads, and facilitates the IWC Zone leads’ provincial collaboration, information exchange, and cooperation on all mutual endeavors. Together with the Operational Leads in the Zone, and by establishing effective modes of communication and engagement with physicians and program partners, the AMD works to provide quality, innovative, and efficient health services to Indigenous Peoples.

 

The AMD contributes to provincial recommendations regarding service development and resource allocation within Indigenous Health with respect to health services for distinctions based Indigenous Peoples. This will include identifying, engaging, and collaborating with distinctions based Indigenous communities and other Indigenous health organizations to effectively support, guide, and advocate for implementation of primary care and other health care services that will address the needs of Indigenous Peoples across the province.

Required Qualifications 
 

The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Canadian College of Family Physicians or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and shall have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Additional Required Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will have worked in Indigenous communities or with Indigenous Peoples. They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with the ability to build relationships, trust, and collaboration between AHS, other health care service providers, and Indigenous communities. They will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, and a passion for quality and patient safety. The ideal candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, an ability to mentor other Indigenous and non-Indigenous physicians and be able to relate and engage with Indigenous leadership and Indigenous organizations.

 

In addition, the successful applicant shall have, a successful record of achievement as a leader, including experience in physician leadership and development, strategic planning, and service delivery in large and diverse organization. The incoming AMD must have a demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. This person will be an effective communicator with strong organizational skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing long term quality services. The ability to foster partnerships and achieve organizational goals within a large and complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications 

Previous experience working with Indigenous communities and with Indigenous Peoples.
