Responsibilities:
The CICU Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1.    The direction and supervision of the physicians’ practices while working in the adult site CICUs.
2.    The development of medical staff policies, procedures and standard practices for CICU physicians.  
3.    Establish role descriptions and monitor the performance of bedside physicians / resident extenders and residents assigned to Regional CICUs.
4.    Assist the CICU Patient Care Managers with the development of policies, procedures, and standard practices for disciplines other than medicine.
5.    Assist the CICU Patient Care Managers with the preparation of capital equipment and operational budgets.
6.    Provide adequate and effective direction to and supervision of professional and technical staff of the CICUs.
7.    Participate in the annual reviews of manager and physician performance.
8.    Work with Critical Care Medicine at the RGH and the PLC to discuss and resolve issues in common for the confined units at those sites.
9.    Work with the Patient Care Managers to investigate and follow-up on complaints concerning physician/staff relations in the CICUs in a timely manner.
10.    Collaborate with the Section Chief of Cardiology and the Clinical Department Head, Cardiac Sciences in the granting of Medical Staff Privileges and to monitor the application of Special Procedural Privileges as they related to the CICU.
11.    Facilitate quality improvement initiatives within the CICU and monitor the Quality Assurance Program.
12.    Assist the Clinical Department Head, Cardiac Sciences or designate, with the selection of testing procedures and equipment.
13.    Maintain annual statistics/database and report relevant data on patient care on a quarterly or annual basis (as appropriate).
14.    Develop, implement, and/or facilitate clinical research protocols.
15.    Function as the medical liaison with Cardiac Intensive Care Unit(s) nursing staff.
16.    Establish medical and professional practices that meet or exceed the technical standards.
17.    Assist with curriculum development/implementation/assessment for Cardiology and subspecialty residents as it relates to the CICUs.
18.    Provide or facilitate continuing education, development, and training of technical and professional staff.
19.    Serve as the Chair of the CICU Advisory Committee.

Other duties as assigned by the Section Chief of Cardiology on an ad-hoc basis.   

Qualifications:

Qualifications include an MD, training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. A record of excellence in clinical research with a focus on Quality Improvement is desirable.

Eligibility for medical licensure in the Province of Alberta is required.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Must read, write and speak English.
