Clinical Locum in Adult Critical Care Medicine – Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone
The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, and Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone is inviting applications for a one-year clinical locum position in the Neurosciences Intensive Care and Observation Units. It would be preferred that the candidate have expertise in neurocritical care. The successful candidate must be eligible for clinical academic colleague status within the Department of Critical Care Medicine, in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta.
The successful applicant must hold an MD and FRCPC qualifications or equivalent with training in Critical Care Medicine and have or be eligible for licensure in Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate will lead the inter-professional critical care team during clinical weeks on call in the role of attending physician in the Neurosciences Intensive Care and Observation Units at the University Alberta Hospital. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within a collaborative and interdisciplinary program involving multiple specialties (neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, neuroradiology, trauma surgery, etc.).
The Neurosciences ICU is one of only two dedicated neurocritical care units in Canada. We encompass 11 ventilated ICU beds and 8 high acuity beds and admit over 900 patients per year. We have a closed unit, and incorporate shared management with our consultant neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic and trauma surgeons. Our neurosciences units contribute to a wide range of scholarly pursuits, including research in investigator initiated, CIHR funded, and industry funded projects, and participation in the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Registry. With a major expansion in planning, and plans for expansion to include a neurocritical care fellowship program, these are exciting and optimistic times for Neurocritical Care in Northern Alberta. We are proud of our multidisciplinary collaborative care model for patients with complicated neurological and neurosurgical disorders and for our integral work supporting organ donation.
Remuneration will be fee-for-service provided through 8-12 clinical service weeks in the Neurosciences Intensive and Observation Units.
The anticipated start date will be January 1, 2026.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a
growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 9 Full-Time and 6
Special-Continuing Academic Faculty and over 60 Clinical Faculty, across two teaching and
three community Alberta Health Services’ operated hospitals (covering ~ 127 adult ICU beds in
8 ICUs) in the city of Edmonton. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College training
program in Critical Care Medicine and overseas the ICU training of numerous rotating specialist
programs. Research in the Department spans a wide spectrum from basic science and
translational work through health services research and clinical trials across all aspects of the
practice of Critical Care Medicine.
The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to unit initiatives which include opportunities in education, quality improvement, and investigator-initiated research programs across the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department of Critical Care Medicine. The candidate will be expected to contribute to academic teaching and to supervise and mentor clinical learners, graduate students, and emerging faculty members.
