The successful applicant must hold an MD and FRCPC qualifications or equivalent with training in Critical Care Medicine and have or be eligible for licensure in Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate will lead the inter-professional critical care team during clinical weeks on call in the role of attending physician in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within a collaborative and interdisciplinary program involving multiple specialties.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital has over 800 beds and is one of Canada's leading clinical and teaching hospitals, treating patients from across western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services within cardiology, medicine, obstetrics, surgery, critical care, emergency and trauma care. It houses the regional thoracic surgery program. The ICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is currently operating as a 29 bed unit served by 11 fellowship trained intensivists with base training in Anesthesia, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Hematology, General Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Emergency Medicine and General/Trauma/ENT Surgery. There is full time coverage by critical care trained Nurse Practitioners as well as rotating residents and fellowship trainees. There are approximately 1450 admissions per year including trauma as well as medical, surgical and obstetrical cases.
Remuneration will be fee-for-service provided through approximately 6 clinical service weeks in the Royal Alexandra Hospital Intensive Care Unit.
Locum duration: January - June, 2026.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 9 Full-Time and 6 Special-Continuing Academic Faculty and over 60 Clinical Faculty, across two teaching and three community Alberta Health Services’ operated hospitals (covering ~ 127 adult ICU beds in 8 ICUs) in the city of Edmonton. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College training program in Critical Care Medicine and overseas the ICU training of numerous rotating specialist programs. Research in the Department spans a wide spectrum from basic science and translational work through health services research and clinical trials across all aspects of the practice of Critical Care Medicine.
The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to unit initiatives which include opportunities in education, quality improvement, and investigator-initiated research programs across the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department of Critical Care Medicine. The candidate will be expected to contribute to academic teaching and to supervise and mentor clinical learners, graduate students, and emerging faculty members.
