Department of Critical Care Medicine – Clinical Scholar (Locum)

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Critical Care Medicine, in partnership with the Clinical Department of Adult Critical Care, Edmonton Zone, Alberta Health Services, invites applications for an Intensivist - Clinical Scholar (Locum). Clinical service (locum) coverage will occur at one or more of the mixed medical/surgical or specialty ICUs across the five acute care hospitals in the Edmonton Zone. Academic (scholarly) activity will be based at the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

The Department is a growing research and education-focused Department. Research spans the spectrum from basic and translational work through epidemiology, clinical trials, and health services research in all aspects of the practice of critical care. Education encompasses a core Royal College accredited training program, specialized clinical fellowship programs, quality and safety, and critical care ultrasound and simulation.

The Clinical Department of Adult Critical Care, Edmonton Zone provides tertiary critical care services for the population of Edmonton, northern Alberta, and parts of western and northern Canada. The Department is one of the largest integrated Departments of Critical Care Medicine in Canada with more than 100 multi-system, neurosciences, and cardiovascular surgical critical care beds. Alignment with the academic Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta facilitates excellence not only in the provision of innovative and high-quality clinical care, but also research, scholarly activity, and teaching.

Objectives of the Clinical Scholar program:

·       Enable opportunity for expanded academic and scholarly training and development for eligible candidates.

·       Build academic and scholarly capacity in the Department.

Eligibility:

·       Candidates will be trained and certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC or FRCSC, possess a specialist certificate (or be eligible) or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure as a specialist with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

·       Candidates will have a comprehensive 1–2-year plan for further academic and scholarly training and development. This may include formal training (e.g., graduate studies degree [e.g., Masters, PhD) or comparable alternative in the domains of research, education, quality improvement and patient safety, critical care ultrasound and/or additional academic domain.

·       The proposed plan for the Clinical Scholar position should outline a description of timeline, deliverables and, as applicable, a mitigation strategy.

·       Candidates are expected identify and develop a mentorship plan with a faculty member in the Department.

·       The proposed academic and scholarly work should align with identified priorities within the Department and applicable and relevant to the practice of critical care.

Terms of Reference:

·       Candidates will have locum privileges in adult critical care within the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Edmonton Zone.

·       Privileges will be for a 1-year locum position, potentially renewable for an additional 1-year period.

·       Clinical service coverage will occur at one or more of the mixed medical/surgical ICUs, and if applicable, a specialized ICU (e.g., Neurosciences ICU; Cardiovascular Surgery ICU) across the five acute care hospitals in the Edmonton Zone.

·       Remuneration will be though clinical work and consist of Fee for Service and/or Clinical Alternative Relationship Plan (cARP), depending on the mixed medical/surgical ICUs, with up to 8 weeks of service within the Edmonton Zone.

·       As Clinical Scholar positions are funded through clinical work, opportunities for these positions are contingent upon available clinical service time in the Edmonton Zone and may not be available to offer every year.

·       Clinical scholar positions do not constitute a guarantee for permanent hiring within the Department.
