Sunrise Medical Clinic at Marlborough Mall, NE Calgary, is one of the oldest clinics in NE, Calgary, established almost 30 years ago by my colleague, Dr. Darshan Brar (who retired in June 2021). As we are an established clinic at a strategic location, we serve patients from a wide area including all of NE Calgary as well as SE communities. As per Alberta Health Primary Care Network Operations, 5th edition August 2022, 2. HQCA, our medical home takes care of patients from Lower NE Calgary, a local geographic area (LGA) in the AHS Calgary zone with a population of 95,795 people in 2021. In addition to our patient panel living in Lower NE Calgary, our practice also serves patients from Calgary Centre, Calgary East, Calgary Upper NE, Chestermere, High River, Airdrie, and SW Calgary. Our practice mostly caters to urban population with the largest age group of 35-64 accounted for 40.2% of the LGA population, children under 17 made up 22.6% and 65 and older accounted 13.2%. Lower Calgary NE has higher proportion of low income after tax families compared to Alberta (17.2% vs 15.6%), higher proportion of female lone parent families (15.9% vs 11.0%), higher proportion of visible minority (56.2% vs 23.5%), First Nations and Inuit people, proportion is lower (1.1% vs 2.8%) and much higher proportion of population of non English/non French speaking people compared to AB (4.1% vs 1.4%). Our immediate surrounding population has a high percentage of new immigrants, with varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We get around 5 to 10 requests every day from new patients for empanelment, which we are not able to accept, due to our existing large panel (as I had to assume care of most of the patients of my retired colleague who are still following at the clinic). The support of additional Physicians is required and would be appreciated by the community so that we could provide them with timely and comprehensive care. Our practice provides a full spectrum of clinic based, culturally sensitive patient care. We care for patients with clinically myriad medical conditions including prenatal and post-natal care, women's health, refugee health and general population
health.
