Qualifications:
To be sponsored as an international medical graduate (IMG) for assessment and practice in Alberta, Canada, you typically need to fulfill several requirements. Here are the main qualifications and steps:
- Medical Degree: Possess a medical degree from a recognized institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
- Language Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in English, often through tests such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
- Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I: Successfully complete the MCCQE Part I, which assesses your medical knowledge and clinical decision-making ability.
- Eligibility for Practice Readiness Assessment (PRA): Apply for and be eligible to participate in Alberta Practice Readiness Assessment (PRA) program. - Sponsorship and Support: Secure sponsorship from an Alberta healthcare organization or employer willing to support your PRA and potential employment. Sponsorship is often essential for securing a supervised practice position.
- Immigration Status: Ensure you have the appropriate immigration status, such as a work permit or permanent residency, to legally work in Canada. Our Clinic will assist with the immigration process.
- Registration with CPSA: Upon successful completion of the PRA, you must obtain registration and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
- Continuing Medical Education (CME): Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to CME requirements as mandated by the CPSA and relevant certification bodies. Each of these steps is designed to ensure that international medical graduates meet the high standards required to practice medicine in Alberta and Canada as a whole.
