Job Description:

A community-based psychiatrist. Expected to provide mental healthcare within the community, often as part of a multidisciplinary team, and focuses on early diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with mental health conditions. They utilize community resources and work to ensure accessible and integrated care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis: Conducts psychiatric evaluations, reviews medical history, and assesses patients' mental, emotional, and behavioral states to identify and diagnose mental disorders.
  • Treatment Planning: Develops and implements individualized treatment plans, which may include therapy, medication management, and other interventions.
  • Medication Management: Prescribes and manages medications to treat mental health conditions, staying updated on current medications and dosages, according to Indeed.com.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Provides psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions to help patients manage their symptoms and improve their mental well-being.
  • Community Collaboration: Works with other healthcare professionals, including therapists, counselors, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care.
  • Patient and Family Support: Educates patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Advocacy and Education: Advocates for mental health awareness and provides education within the community.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting assessments, treatment plans, and progress.
  • Coordination of Care: Coordinates with other healthcare professionals and community resources to ensure patients receive the necessary support.
  • Crisis Intervention: Responds to and manages psychiatric crises, providing immediate support and stabilization.


Settings:

  • Community Mental Health Centers: Provide a range of services to individuals and families within a specific geographic area.
  • Outpatient Clinics: Offer psychiatric services on an outpatient basis, often in collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Specialized Psychiatric Hospitals: May provide specialized care for specific populations or conditions, often with outreach and community-focused programs.
  • Primary Care Settings: Collaborate with primary care physicians to integrate mental healthcare into general medical practice.
  • Community Outreach Programs: Engage with community members in various settings, such as schools, workplaces, and community centers, to provide mental health support and education

 
Qualifications:

Appropriate qualifications and training as outlined by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
Must possess a valid Eligibility Letter for sponsorship from CPSA.
