Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary invite applications for the joint position (0.5 FTE) of Zone Clinical Department Head, Critical Care Medicine, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services and Head, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine. These are key leadership positions within Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). The successful candidate will be offered a Contingent Term appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
The AHS Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Critical Care Medicine, will lead and participate in the development of system-wide clinical services for a large and diverse population that incorporates urban Calgary and surrounding suburban and rural communities. The Department of Critical Care Medicine is a major department within the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. The Department fully contributes to the research, educational and service missions of the Cumming School of Medicine.
The Department of Critical Care Medicine has 33 intensivist members and over 50 academic members. The Department is a leader in the continuous development and innovation of system-wide clinical services. The Department has an accredited residency training program in Critical Care Medicine, an active postgraduate and graduate basic sciences training program, and a stellar record of major accomplishments in research.

The Contractor shall provide services to the Calgary Zone in the Department of Critical Care as Zone Clinical Department Head. The position of Zone Clinical Department Head is intended to assist in achieving the vision and mission of AHS. As such, there must be a commitment to excellence in providing an integrated, accessible, and accountable health care system. The Zone is also committed to providing services based on population needs and promoting a shared responsibility for improved health. The Zone Clinical Department Head position is considered to be key for success in meeting these objectives.
In a competent and professional manner, the Contractor will:
1. Ensure the fulfillment of the purpose and role of the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head per the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and AHS Medical Staff Rules.
2. Promote high standards of clinical care within the Calgary Zone Clinical Department.
3. Develop and maintain common goals and objectives for Members of the Department, incorporating the use of a three (3) to five (5) year plan.
4. Develop a departmental organizational structure that will facilitate the Department Members’ involvement in problem-solving, decision-making and ensures the efficient delivery of care.
5. Ensure that a current manpower and recruitment priorities plan, prepared in co-operation with the Zone Medical Director, Calgary is in place for the Department.
6. Provide physician leadership in resource allocation, technology assessment, and patient care related policies and procedures. Such activities include, but are not limited to the development and maintenance of:
· organizational matrix;
· goals and objectives;
· clinical patient care procedures;
· budget;
· utilization review;
· quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives;
· on-call schedules;
· undergraduate and postgraduate education, in consultation with the University of Calgary where applicable;.
7. Ensure processes are in place to promote the maintenance of competency of Department Members.
8. Establish a system to recognize and investigate complaints made against, or disputes between, Department Members and complaints or concerns of the patients of AHS in accordance with applicable Zone and Departmental policies.
9. Represent the Department on appropriate Committees of the Medical Staff and AHS.
10. Conduct regular general meetings of the Members of the Department. Minutes of such meetings shall be maintained and forwarded to the Zone Medical Administrative Committee for information.
11. Protect time within the clinical service organization for appropriate academic activities of department members as agreed to at the time of their appointment.
Qualifications include an MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Critical Care Medicine. The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with academic qualifications commensurate with a Contingent Term appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level as well as proven leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills, and a strong academic and health service delivery background with demonstrated clinical, research and educational achievements.
