As the Digital Health Provincial Physician Design Lead (PDL), you will lead and oversee the strategic direction and execution of digital transformation in healthcare across the province. This senior leadership role combines clinical expertise with digital health vision to shape and guide the future of clinical information systems through:

  • Oversight of the maintenance and improvement of knowledge and workflows in clinical information systems with a goal to improve quality, efficiency, and safety of patient care;
  • Engaging with prescribers, clinical leaders, and other stakeholders to gather input and advice on clinical information system improvements, as well as to champion system adoption;
  • Directing the development of communications and education materials for prescribers to drive optimal system use and improve user satisfaction.

In these capacities, the PDL will collaborate with teams including the CMIO, Training, Clinical Systems Improvement (CSI) Teams and Prescriber Experience teams and will work with Clinical Informaticians, IT analysts, COIO team members, Clinical Operations Readiness (CORe) Leads, Provincial Medical Informatics Leads (PMILs), and more. The PDL reports to the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to provide updates for all clinical programs and ensure clinical systems work is aligned with enterprise-wide digital health standards and initiatives.

 

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
 

In this capacity, the PDL is entrusted with the following responsibilities:
 

Management, Mentorship, and Support of Provincial Medical Informatics Leads (PMILs):

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to PMILs to ensure alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Mentor and develop PMILs to enhance their professional growth and effectiveness in their roles.
  • Facilitate regular meetings and communications with PMILs to ensure consistency and coordination across clinical programs.
  • Address and resolve any issues or challenges faced by PMILs in the execution of their responsibilities.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive environment among PMILs to promote the sharing of best practices and continuous improvement.
     

Maintenance and Improvement of Knowledge and Workflows in Clinical Information Systems: Identify opportunities for improvement of clinical system knowledge and workflows by:

  • Engaging with prescribers, clinical leaders, and other stakeholders across clinical programs.
  • Reviewing medical literature (and/or collaborating with others who do so).
  • Analyzing prescriber feedback and measurements of prescriber efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction.

 

Work collaboratively with central Digital Health governance groups, project teams, build teams and CSI Teams as required to review, prioritize, and implement improvements in clinical system knowledge and workflows, including updating, optimizing, developing, and/or retiring:

  • Ordering tools – orders, order panels, order sets, therapy/treatment plans, etc.
  • Documentation tools – templates, letters, flowsheets, voice dictation tools, etc.
  • Personalization tools – SmartSets, SmartPhrases, Quick Actions, etc.
  • Clinical Decision Support tools – e.g., Best Practice Alerts (BPA), Dashboards, Reports, guidance text within order sets/system screens, etc.
  • Clinical Pathways – clinical workflows that integrate multiple and multidisciplinary system tools.

 

Apply Evidence-Based Methodology (EBM) and knowledge translation principles to support optimal development/enhancement of clinical system knowledge tools and workflows. Be constantly mindful of where proposed clinical systems improvements may have clinical system content, workflow, or build impacts beyond a single clinical program/specialty or impact other Digital Health initiatives. Collaborate with other Digital Health team members as needed to ensure these impacts are characterized, considered, and addressed.

 

Change Management: Act as a Digital Health change sponsor and champion supporting clinical programs, the CSI Team, and the Digital Health Program.

  • Build coalitions with physicians, senior leadership, managers, and clinicians across the province.
  • Analyze and publish outcomes from the provincial application of Evidence-Based Practices in AHS via the use of clinical information systems.
  • Develop and distribute clinical program-level communications in cooperation with the CMIO Prescriber Experience team. This will include a regular clinical program-specific newsletter that provides updates, notifications, and tips for clinical information system use in various clinical specialties.

 

Digital Health Training and Ongoing Education:

  • Collaborate with the CMIO Training Team to develop, update, and support Digital Health training curriculum and materials for clinical specialties.
  • Gather, review, and apply information gathered from measurement tools such as Signal, NEAT, and feedback surveys to inform strategies and materials for training and ongoing education of prescribers in clinical specialties.
  • Support, through knowledge sharing and feedback, the development of trainers.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Clinical Informatics as required, including but not limited to presentations, small group teaching, and committee preparation.

  

Roles & Responsibilities: The PDL is required to:

  • Manage, mentor, and support Provincial Medical Informatics Leads.
  • Develop proficiency with clinical information systems to enhance communication with technical teams.
  • Promote health systems quality improvement and clinical improvement.
  • Encourage health information literacy and meaningful use of clinical information systems.
  • Apply Evidence-Based Methodology (EBM) and knowledge translation principles in the maintenance and improvement of clinical information system content/workflows.
  • Engage and build productive coalitions with prescribers, clinicians, senior leaders, and Digital Health team members across the province.
  • Facilitate the development and field testing of clinical informatics policies, procedures, prototypical workflows, clinical system content changes, and other artifacts.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and optimization of clinical information system interfaces and issues.
  • Represent the CMIO office at relevant Provincial committees.
  • Regularly use and monitor their AHS email account.
     

Qualifications and Required Attributes:

  • A seasoned physician with a deep understanding of large-scale transformational change.
  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of successful program management.
  • Clear communication and presentation skills, coupled with a pragmatic problem-solving approach.
  • Experience in clinical operations and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and medical communities.
  • Proficiency in aligning business practices with organizational objectives and strategies.
  • A visionary who can contribute to the innovation, integration, and consistency of patient-centered clinical care.

 

Reporting Relationship:

The practitioner will report to the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO).
