Alberta Health Services - North Zone, is actively recruiting a Family Medicine with Obstetrics physician to establish a full-time practice in the community of Lac La Biche. This position will provide services in Community Clinic, Emergency Room Coverage, Basic Low Risk Obstetrics, Inpatient & Outpatient Services, and Long-Term Care.

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or opening their own practice. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence within the community of Lac La Biche.
  • Establish and maintain full time community-based practice within the community.
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services.
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including equal participation in the Emergency and Obstetrics call schedules, as required.
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Department of Family Medicine.
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative duties, as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care.

Community Information

Lac La Biche is a beautiful lakeside hamlet within Lac La Biche County. The county has a population of just over 8,000. Lac La Biche is the second oldest settled community in Alberta, the original fort was built in 1799. A playground of opportunity, Lac La Biche County is a community of choice in northeastern Alberta. Rolling farmland, panoramic lake views and tranquil forests are all right in their backyard.

The community has all of the amenities you need to live, learn, work, raise a family or retire here. The same qualities that made this region attractive historically still applies to modern times: with abundant resources, a pristine environment and room to grow.

The County is a regional hub of recreation, with 46 kms of walking trails, 8 outdoor rinks, and 15 boat launches. The Bold Centre recreational multiplex features two indoor ice arenas, two field houses, a three-lane indoor running track, a curling ring, a fitness studio, a boxing area, food vendors, childcare and more! Baseball enthusiasts, boaters, fishers and campers alike can find space to enjoy their hobbies in the natural beauty of Lac La Biche. 

Three school divisions operate in Lac La Biche County, with K-12 schools running in both Lac La Biche and Plamondon. Regional secondary education is also available in Lac La Biche with Portage College’s main campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • 1 -2 years recent emergency room experience (rural)
  • Must have hands on Obstetrics experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP).
  • Certificate of the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) – Emergency Medicine 
  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
  • MOREOB/Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
