The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCNS) at the Cumming School of Medicine (www.ucalgary.ca/dcns/) is a leading center for clinical care, education, and research. The Opportunity
We are seeking a full-time, fee-for-service Neurologist with specialized expertise in epilepsy to join the Calgary Epilepsy Program and the General Neurology Program. The successful candidate will provide care to patients with complex epilepsy and other neurological conditions. The role balances patient care, teaching, and a modest amount of clinical research in a supportive, academically oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Epilepsy Care:
- Conduct ambulatory epilepsy clinics at the South Health Campus.
- Provide advanced epilepsy care, including presurgical evaluations, complex intracranial monitoring, cortical electrode interpretation, cortical stimulation, and interpretation of electrocorticography.
- Read continuous Video-EEG monitoring from neurology wards and ICU, and manage patients in Seizure Monitoring Units at Foothills Medical Centre and South Health Campus.
- Collaborate in epilepsy surgery rounds, case conferences, and inpatient epilepsy consultations.
- General Neurology & On-Call Duties:
- Participate in general neurology services, including the Urgent Neurology Clinic and General Neurology clinics.
- Cover on-call duties (up to 8 weeks per year, depending on clinical need) to support epilepsy and general neurology services city-wide.
- Read EEGs from multiple sites and manage evoked potentials in the operating room and ICU as required.
- Teaching & Research:
- Contribute to the teaching of medical trainees, including medical students and residents, as part of the department’s academic mission.
- Engage in limited, focused clinical research activities that may lead to improved patient care and inform best practices in epilepsy.
Qualifications & Requirements
- MD (or equivalent) and Specialist Certificate in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
- Eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta.
- Demonstrated expertise in epilepsy management, including complex presurgical workups and interpretation of invasive monitoring.
- Strong record of clinical excellence, and effective teamwork and communication skills.
- Additional training or experience in sleep neurology is an asset but not required.
- Must be proficient in English (read, write, speak).
