Description:

As Interim Medical Director, Intensive Palliative Care Unit (IPCU), the Medical Director will:
•    Work in a dyad relationship with the Unit Manager of Unit 95, Arthur Child Cancer Centre in program development for the IPCU;
•    Work with the Medical Director,Palliative / End of Life Care program to assure integration of palliative programs;
•    Lead the development and dissemination of best practices and clinical practice guidelines for palliative care within the unit, in collaboration with the Unit Manager;
•    Lead efforts to ensure IPCU meets the needs of medical trainees (medical students, residents);
•    Lead efforts to develop the research potential of IPCU, in collaboration with the Unit Manager;
•    Assist and support the Medical Director, Palliative & End of Life program with strategic and operational planning for the palliative program;
•    Collaborate with the referring teams (palliative consult team, palliative home care) to ensure that communication and the needs of those teams are also met, when reviewing IPCU referral criteria, determing which patients are appropriate for the IPCU, and efficient handover during admission;
•    Ensure IPCU physicians adhere to policies and practice standards of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and Alberta Health Services;
•    Support alignment of the clinical operation of IPCU and academic direction of the Division of Palliative Medicine;
•    Investigation of IPCU critical incidents, with the Unit manager of Unit 95;
•    Respond to patient complaints of IPCU physicians;
•    Create and maintain a physician staffing schedule for IPCU;
•    Participation in activities to ensure quality and safe medical care.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must maintain licensure or be eligible to receive licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and an appointment with Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone

Preference will be given to individuals with:
•    Advanced training in Palliative Care with a minimum of three-to-five years’ experience in palliative care in a predominantly acute-care inpatient setting;
•    Two to three years of experience as an IPCU Attending Physician
•    Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
•    Demonstrated emotional intelligence
•    Excellent organization and prioritization skills
•    Experience in medical leadership

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Must read, write, and speak English.
