The Medical Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), is a key medical leader within Covenant Health, responsible for facilitating the engagement of Covenant medical staff to advance the integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion across all Covenant sites, in alignment with organizational DEI policies and initiatives and as aligned with the vision, mission, and values of Covenant Health. In doing so, the Medical Director, DEI will ensure Covenant Health strategic directions are considered in all decision-making.
 
The Medical Director, DEI shall be a respected practicing physician who will assist in establishing and coordinating a diverse and inclusive presence for Covenant Health medical staff. The Medical Director, DEI’s primary accountabilities will cross all Covenant sites, and will be provincially based. Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Contributing to strategic planning of the Mission, Ethics & Spirituality team in alignment with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) work plan and Covenant Health corporate goals and priorities;
  • Collaborating with the Corporate Director, Diversity, Ethics & Volunteerism, members of the Mission, Ethics & Spirituality portfolio, and other Covenant Health departments to develop and support the implementation of best practices in physician diversity, equity, and inclusion and wellness such as:
    • Creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming culture that emanates equity and justice.
    • Developing and maintaining an environment that values, appreciates and welcomes medical staff of all backgrounds and diverse characteristics.
    • Developing inclusive workplaces, thereby creating a culture where everyone feels respected, has equal opportunity, and whose voices are valued.
  • In collaboration with Learning & Development and other portfolios as applicable, participating in the development of education programs and learning sessions for Covenant Health staff and physicians to promote DEI; 
  • Ensuring Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are incorporated in medical staff recruitment policies and processes and educating Covenant Health Medical Leaders and Medical Affairs department members of same.
  • Promoting awareness and advancing the Indigenous health recommendations from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission for all Covenant medical staff.
  • Participating in DEI meetings, committees, working groups including but not limited to:
    • Indigenous Advisory Body Meeting
    • DEI Prioritization Meeting
    • Mission Inspired Culture Meetings
    • Other DEI meetings as requested
    • Attend meetings as delegate for the Deputy CMO, as requested
  • Representing Covenant Health and the CMO office in collaborating with AHS and other organizations, where appropriate, to support physician diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness and development initiatives;
  • Representing Covenant Health and the CMO office in discussions about physician diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness and development;
  • Participating in AHS provincial and Zone leadership meetings as delegated by the Deputy CMO;
  • Performs other medical leadership duties as assigned by the Deputy CMO.

The successful applicant must be eligible for and obtain appointment to the AHS Medical Staff and clinical privileges at a Covenant Health site.
