Job Summary:

The Medical Lead, Virtual Opioid Dependency Program Virtual-Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (V-RAAM) Admissions will provide medical leadership of admission services under the purview of the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program (VODP). This Medical Leader will collaborate with and coordinate VODP procedures and process with the V-RAAM service to provide Addiction Medicine Physician consultation support across the province for behavioural addiction and non-opioid substance use disorders.

V-RAAM is a virtual care program offering rapid, low-barrier access to non-opioid addiction treatment for individuals across Alberta. This service provides comprehensive care to adult and youth clients for all non-opioid substance and behavioural addiction concerns to address service gaps and offer quick access alternatives to traditional service models. We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach providing a combination of medical and psychosocial treatment options, including:

  • Safe and effective medication for non-opioid substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. 
  • Home detoxification services
  • Access to addiction support groups and programs
  • Short term outpatient counselling
  • Collaborative care planning and goal setting
  • Referrals to treatment or withdrawal management (detoxification), community support, long-term and/or other specialty services
     

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  • Provide medical leadership and oversight of services provided through the VODP Program and the V-RAAM Admissions program to support new client access points, including:
    • V-RAAM
    • Same Day Starts (SDS) Services / EMS / Navigation and Support Centres
    • Transitional Treatment Services including support to Primary Care Networks, V-RAAM and VODP
    • Low Barrier Urgent Access (LBUA) Services
    • Law Enforcement (Police/RCMP) and Correctional Health Services.
  • Develop, maintain, and ensure compliance with clinical expectation/standards of practice for physicians.
  • Develop and enact a physician workforce plan for the physicians’ providing services in the program.
  • Work collaboratively to enact physician compensation models that support the recruitment and retainment of addiction medicine physicians.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships to align priorities, address gaps, and coordinate service delivery to ensure delivery of quality, innovative, and efficient health services:
    • Work in close partnership with other VODP medical and operational leaders. 
    • Engage with a variety of stakeholders external to Recovery Alberta. 
  • Provide clinical and operational leadership to ensure high-quality, safe, innovative and evidence-informed standards of care that ensure defined health outcomes are being achieved.
  • Lead or participate in evaluation, quality improvement, and research activities. 
     

Qualifications and Required Attributes:

The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Canadian College of Family Physicians or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and shall have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Addiction Medicine and/or a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine by College of Family Physicians of Canada and/or Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine certification or equivalent is preferred.

In addition, the successful applicant shall have:

  • Experience in provision of treatment of addiction and mental health;
  • The practitioner will obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment.

Preferably applicants will have experience providing virtual addiction care.

Reporting Relationship:

  • The practitioner will report to the Medical Director, Virtual Opioid Dependency Program.

  • FTE: 0.3
  • Remuneration is based on CMO Policy 01-01.
