The successful candidate will join a group of 29 divisional members in the Department of Pediatrics and an active multidisciplinary environment inclusive of neonatal nurse practitioners and associate physicians.

Members of the program support neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) coverage at 5 hospitals in the Edmonton Zone along with a comprehensive neurodevelopmental follow-up program. The Stollery Philip C Etches NICU, a 69-bed mixed level 2 and 3 unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital provides care for extremely preterm infants and critically ill newborns. The Stollery David Schiff NICU is an 18-bed level 3/4 unit (increasing to 21 beds in January 2026) providing pre- and post-operative care including comprehensive congenital heart disease management. Three level 2 units are situated at the Sturgeon Community Hospital (8-bed level 2, Stollery Sturgeon NICU) and at the two Covenant Health Services sites, the Grey Nuns (26-bed level 2c NICU) and Misericordia (18-bed – increasing to 21 bed level 2c NICU) Community Hospitals. The Northern Alberta Neonatal Transport Program operates 2 transport teams (3rd team to be operationalized September 2025) providing over 800-900 within and out-of-zone transports per year to residents of the Edmonton Zone and northern half of the province, parts of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut and supporting surrounding communities.

The successful candidate will primarily support the level 2 NICUs though there would be opportunities to join the level 3 teams in the future, as the program services move toward having level 3 capacity at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital NICU.

The program adheres to Alberta FICare principles and engages in quality improvement activities with multiple working groups and committees dedicated to knowledge translation and benchmarking. The program offers comprehensive targeted neonatal echocardiography and hemodynamic consultation, neonatal neurocritical care, point of care ultrasound and comprehensive neurodevelopmental follow-up at the Northern Neonatal Follow-up Clinic, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
