Ophthalmologist – Cornea Specialist

Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting a Cornea Specialist. The Department’s vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research.
The successful candidate will have medical and surgical experience and expertise in the identification and treatment of eye diseases including care of ocular surface disease, cornea transplantation, and corneal and external diseases. The University of Alberta seeks a candidate with a proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals. Research and clinical teaching experience is essential. Interest in resident training is of significant importance.
The Department of Ophthalmology’s Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is a Center of Excellence for all levels of ophthalmic care. It serves a population of over 3 million people in the Edmonton region, the northern areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan as well as the Northwest and Yukon Territories. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences consists of over 40 staff ophthalmologists with teaching appointments within the FOMD at the University of Alberta. The University of Alberta Ophthalmology training program will have 15 residents and capacity for up to 5 fellows. Current areas of research strength include ocular genetics, retinal disease and tele-ophthalmology.
Job Description
Clinical Practice: Full time surgical and medical comprehensive practice; Two (2) days per month at the Royal Alexandra Hospital EIA Clinic, in addition to on-call responsibilities, and the remainder will be community-based
Surgical Practice: To start, a minimum of two (2) operating days per month will be provided in the Edmonton Zone, at RAH and chartered surgical facilities (CSF). The operating time will be shared with the other Ophthalmologists in the zone.
Call Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join the Ophthalmology on-call schedule where duties are shared between ophthalmologists in the Edmonton Zone. There is a requirement to be on-site at RAH for on-call days.
Teaching and Research: Regular, onsite teaching of Cornea Ophthalmology for ophthalmology residents at the EIA clinic, and at the EIA Friday academic half days is mandatory. Medical student teaching is also required. Teaching will be enabled through an appointment as a Clinical Academic Colleague within the University of Alberta FOMD.
Committee Work: It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in improving the lives of patients, learners and ophthalmologists in Edmonton by volunteering to participate on a variety of committees.
Research: The successful candidate will participate in eye care and ocular disease research and act as a mentor for learners including fellows, residents and medical students.

Applicants must be licensed in good standing, or eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Candidates will have completed a residency in Ophthalmology and a minimum of a one-year subspecialty cornea fellowship at an accredited institution. Experience in medical education and resident training is desired.
