The Contractor shall ensure the Practitioner provides, and the Practitioner shall provide services to the Provincial portfolio of the Chief Medical Officer as Physician Investigator.

  

In a competent and professional manner, the Contractor and the Practitioner will:

In general:

  • Be assigned to panels to investigate concerns by the Medical Advisor (Issues and Concerns) of the Associate Chief Medical Officer.
  • During participation in an investigation panel, be available in a timely basis for meetings of the panel, interviews of complainants, respondents, and other persons relevant to an investigation, review relevant clinical information, review and received written submissions, weigh evidence, draft a report related to a determination of facts from the investigation, and a recommendation to resolution.

 

Specific duties included but not limited to:

  • Provide effective and consistent communication:  have a current AHS email address reviewed on a regular basis. Be available and respond to phone or pager communication.
  • Conduct reviews and/or investigations into matters of concern that involve members of the AHS Medical Staff (practitioners) that have an Appointment and Privileges.
  • Research and gather relevant governance documents that are applicable to the matter under review given the unique circumstances of each case.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders such as medical administrative leaders or other AHS personnel such as Human Resources, Protective Services, and Medical Affairs.  
  • Be designated as the lead investigator / reviewer, with responsibility for overseeing planning and coordination of the review or investigation on an investigation panel or review team comprised of two or more individuals.
  • Draft the final investigation/review report in collaboration with other members of the investigation panel or review team.
  • Consider feedback provided by Medical Affairs and AHS legal counsel.
  • Be accountable for remaining attentive to timelines, administrative fairness procedures, AHS policies, departmental expectations, section and site procedures, and any other expectations set by the Zone Medical Director or designate that may be applicable in the circumstances.
  • Contribute to ongoing review of Part 6 of the Medical Staff Bylaws by providing input and making recommendations for revisions.
  • Be involved in contributing to quality improvement initiatives by working in collaboration with medical administrative leaders and AHS operations personnel to address systemic issues arising from investigations and reviews.

  

Other Expectations:

  • Complete a program and participate in ongoing professional development with respect to principles of natural justice, physician behaviour and disruption, respectful communication, workplace behaviour, occupational health and safety, and other courses as recommended by the CMO portfolio
  • Complete required Indigenous training modules and certificate program through MyLearningLink in support of the AHS initiative to create an inclusive health system where all Albertans are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Completing all required online privacy training modules through MyLearningLink.

 

Further to Section 3.1(a), for the purposes of this agreement, FTE shall mean the following:

  • A 0.2 FTE is equivalent to a full day worked per week and therefore 0.40 FTE is equivalent to two days worked per week.
