The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a key executive leadership position with Primary Care Alberta (PCA). The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the integration and coordination of a complex health delivery model across various functions, including  

  • Guidance and oversight to primary care leaders and medical staff, in turn enabling high quality patient care; and 
  • Leading the development and implementation of clinical policies and procedures for Primary Care Alberta (PCA); 

  

This position will maintain a strong emphasis on the importance of quality and patient safety, engagement, leadership development, and effective relationships between medical staff and the health care system, academic institutions and other primary care organizations and service providers in Alberta. 

  

The location for this position is negotiable across Alberta. The FTE is negotiable between 0.7 to 1.0.

Job Description: 
  

Reporting directly to the CEO of Primary Care Alberta, the CMO is accountable and responsible for all medical staff related matters and decisions, practitioner recruitment, retention, development and wellness provincially; and will implement policies established by PCA related to Medical Staff, ensuring the provision of high quality and safe patient care. 
 

This role ensures the strategic planning and delivery of high quality, safe, patient and family centred care are in full compliance with laws, regulations and relevant professional standards of conduct and policies, while ensuring that all regulatory and related external reporting requirements for services are met; oversees the strategic application of leading practices to achieve clinical quality outcomes and improved performance measures. 

  

The CMO will be responsible for: 

  • Liaising with medical directors in Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and Regional Health Care Networks (RHCNs); 
  • Leading collaboration with medical leaders in other Provincial Health Agencies (PHAs) and Health Service Delivery Organizations to facilitate integrated care for patients; 
  • Overseeing processes and governance structures that enable effective physician input on strategic and clinical issues;  
  • Leading people responsibilities of the role and provides coaching, guidance and mentoring as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensure the achievement of established objectives and plans; and 
    • Serving as a key PCA spokesperson for medical issues, with both internal stakeholders (such as staff and physicians) and external parties (such as patients, the media, and other healthcare organizations and agencies). 
       

Required Qualifications 
  

A minimum of eligibility for medical licensure in Alberta, including certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent professional body. Eligibility to be a member of the AHS Medical Staff. 

  

At least eight (8) years’ leadership experience in health care operations including three (3) years’ experience in senior leadership roles in clinical services or healthcare operations and is seen as a provincial and national leader in the development and delivery of clinical quality and medical delivery. 
 

Experience leading, supporting and assisting in development of medical leaders and experience leading quality & healthcare improvement programs or initiatives.

Additional Required Qualifications 
 

Successful record of achievement as a leader, including extensive experience in physician leadership and development, strategic planning and service delivery in large and diverse organization. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing long term quality services. The ability to foster partnerships and achieve organizational goals within a large and complex organization. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 
 

Possesses Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential.
