Dr. Eric Hyndman is finishing his term. The Department of Surgery is very grateful to Dr. Hyndman for his outstanding leadership in the last 5 years. We sincerely thank him for his hard work and dedication.
This leadership position is open to active members of Section of Urology, Calgary Zone AHS. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated an interest in surgical leadership and will have a respected profile in the physician community. They will have effective communication skills and a track record of engaging their team members. They will have demonstrated success in areas of clinical practice and either education, research, quality improvement or leadership.
The Section Chief, Urology, Department of Surgery, Calgary Zone plays an important role in supporting the mission of the Department of Surgery. They will be responsible for the overall function and structure of this section and will deal with day-to-day issues related to section’s activity. The DoS will provide administrative support for this position.
Duties and responsibilities include:
• Recommend appointments and clinical privileges, as well as changes to them, to the Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery.
• Develop and implement procedures, practices, goals, and objectives for the Zone Clinical Section, aligned with the Mission Statement, and Strategic Plans of AHS and the Department of Surgery.
• Assign duties and responsibilities to members of the Zone Clinical Section of Urology in alignment with AHS objectives and goals.
• Promote and represent the activities of the Zone Clinical Section.
• Supervise the clinical work of all surgeon members of the Zone Clinical Section of Urology.
• Assist in developing AHS-wide criteria for urologic procedures.
• Promote educational programs for Section members and associated staff. Organize regular subspecialty rounds within the Section to foster clinical, academic, and professional development of Section members.
• Develop and promote departmental and sectional research activities.
• Ensuring that Department of Surgery policies regarding quality of patient care and safety are implemented and developed further
• Participate in Triggered Initial Assessments and Triggered Reviews, when assigned by the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery
• Assist in conducting Periodic Reviews for Section members (per Part 5 of AHS Bylaws).
• Act as designated person for the Calgary Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery for duties assigned by AHS Bylaws or Medical Staff
Rules.
• Convene regular meetings (at least quarterly) of the Zone Clinical Section of Urology to discuss administrative matters and maintain
minutes.
• Provide materials for departmental reports upon request, including an Annual Report.
• In consultation with Section members and the Zone Clinical Department Head, Surgery, ensure alignment of DoS and Section Strategic Planning and vision.
• Work with operation executives to ensure appropriate utilization of zonal resources by Section members, especially in areas such as beds, operating rooms, ambulatory care, diagnostic testing, and drug utilization.
