Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for the position of Associate Zone Medical Director under the Calgary Zone
Medical Affairs Portfolio.
As a senior medical leader within Calgary Zone, the AZMD will provide direct support to the Zone Medical Director who is
accountable for all AHS Medical Staff-related matters, as well as all operational and strategic issues and decisions requiring
Practitioner input or leadership that arise within the Zone. The incumbent will develop collaborative relationships with
internal and external stakeholders such as medical and operational leaders within both the Calgary Zone and the province,
the University of Calgary, Primary Care Networks, and other physician led organizations.
The AZMD will report directly to the Zone Medical Director and will provide medical administrative leadership to select clinical
departments and oversee defined areas of clinical and academic importance. In a competent and professional manner, the
Contractor will:
1. Provide medical administrative leadership for clinical departments, programs and service areas as assigned. The
AZMD will work collaboratively with the administrative leads on issues related to resource allocation, including
development and management of budgets consistent with the health care priorities as established by AHS.
2. Provide leadership within the Zone’s administration and be actively involved when it comes to departmental
activities and decision-making processes (resource allocation, service distribution, technology assessment and
patient care related policies and procedures).
3. Liaise with and support the respective Zone Clinical Department Heads and, where appropriate, the Zone clinical
Department Site/Section Chiefs. The AZMD will work to ensure appropriate medical input from divisional,
department and program leads with regards to operational decisions.
4. As required, coordinate problem solving of health services delivery issues with operational leads (Site/ Section Chiefs
and Zone Clinical Department Heads). Provide leadership and support to enhance safety, quality, program planning,
equipment/ capital planning, patient flow and capacity management.
5. When required, assist in representing the Zone at appropriate AHS Provincial Committees and venues.
6. In the absence of the Calgary Zone Medical Director (ZMD), the AZMD may be delegated to act as, and fulfill the
roles and responsibilities of the ZMD
7. Support and oversee the investigation of complaints made against or disputes between members of the medical staff
as described in the Medical Staff Bylaws and/or in accordance with the applicable AHS and Departmental policies for
review and disposition by the Zone Medical Director.

Qualifications include:
- Proven leadership, communication, organizational, change management, team building and facilitation skills.
- Expertise in developing and providing resources, consultation, and collaborative support to stakeholder teams.
- Ability to design, tailor, implement and evaluate effective strategies to meet identified priorities.
- Experience in supporting and promoting clinical best practice and experience as a change agent.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills well developed interpersonal skills, ability to cultivate positive relationships and passion for patient safety.
- Alberta Health Services privileges to practice at AHS facilities.
