Description:
The ZCDH is an important role, required under the medical staff bylaws and rules. Principal responsibilities relate to the day- to-day running of the department and working with operational staff to deliver high quality, safe patient care. This medical leadership roles reports to the Zone Medical Director.
Although the ZCDH has a number of formal responsibilities under the bylaws, perhaps the most important part of their work is developing a culture of collaboration between department members, between the department and operational staff, and with other departments to ensure delivery of high quality and safe patient care. The ZCDH, together with operational leadership, is responsible for planning and provision of Emergency Medicine services throughout Central Zone.
Key Responsibilities
· Convene and manage meetings of the Central Zone General Surgery Department
· Meet with operational DYAD partner regularly
· Work with other Zone Clinical Departments where appropriate
· Leadership Talent Development and succession planning
· New physician on-boarding
· New staff probationary year – 3, 6 and 9 month check-ins with probationary assessment at 12 months
· Leadership development of departmental members
· Attend Zone Medical Advisory Committee (ZMAC) meetings; RDRHC Facility Medical Administrative Committee (FMAC)
· Performance assessments for medical staff moving from probationary to active status
· Periodic reviews for department members (every 3 years, or annual for staff > 65 years old)
· Represent the department in Zone and Provincial work
· Identify need for and manage recruitment together with Medical Affairs
· Workforce service planning
· Manage local issues related to physicians, including concerns and complaints
· Identify organizational risks (patient safety, political, media) and escalate to medical and operational leadership
· Represent the department positively to external stakeholders on a regional basis
Required Qualifications
Certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent professional body. In addition, the applicant must have:
· Progressive leadership experience in a healthcare environment, including three years of leadership capacity in clinical services or healthcare operations.
· A successful record of achievement as a leader, including experience in improvement and innovation in service delivery and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
· The candidate must licensure with or be eligible with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
