As a Facility Medical Director (FMD), this is a significant position within Central Zone and Alberta Health Services. In this role, you will provide medical leadership and be the face of the medical staff at the facility. You will play a key part in the implementation of strategic initiatives that guide our mission and purpose: To provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans. As well, you will be leading your physician colleagues, and you are often the first point of contact for local issues relating to physicians for operational leaders, and so your ability to build positive effective connected relationships with all staff at the facility is crucial.
Although you will have a number of formal responsibilities as the FMD, perhaps the most important part of your work is to contribute to creating a culture of collaboration to ensure high quality and safe patient care, built on the bedrock of a trusting, multidisciplinary team environment. As the FMD, you will model and help set the tone for the facility and, in doing so, will significantly contribute to its future success.
Key Responsibilities
• Convene local site Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) meetings
• Meet with your operational partner (site manager) and Associate Zone Medical Director regularly
• Review applications for privileges in your facility
• Performance assessments for medical staff moving from probationary to active status
• Periodic reviews for all active medical staff (every 3 years, or annual for staff > 65 years old)
• Ensuring on call coverage and managing issues that arise
• Identify need for and manage recruitment together with Medical Affairs
• Workforce service planning
• Together with operations, manage local issues related to physicians, including concerns and complaints
• Identify organizational risks (patient safety, political, media) and escalate to medical and operational leadership
• Represent the facility positively to external stakeholders
Required Qualifications
Certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent professional body. In addition, the applicant must have:
· Progressive leadership experience in a healthcare environment, including three years of leadership capacity in clinical services or healthcare operations.
· A successful record of achievement as a leader, including experience in improvement and innovation in service delivery and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
· The candidate must licensure with or be eligible with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
