Correctional Health Services, Recovery Alberta is inviting applications for a General Practitioner to work at the Calgary Correctional Centres.
A multidisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, psychologists, addiction counselors, mental health therapists, and psychiatrists work alongside physicians at each facility to provide essential health services including emergency care, diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic illness, medication administration, mental health services, and health promotion and disease prevention.
The successful applicant will engage in clinical service in the facilities that includes outpatient clinics and telephone on-call service. Specifically, this opportunity is to provide up to 1-2 half-day clinics per week (3-4 hour clinics). Additional opportunities exist to provide virtual services to the other Provincial Correctional Facilities.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
Provide medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients in the Centres in compliance with AHS, RA and CPSA policies, standards and guidelines.
Deliver the services during two 3-4 hour clinics per week.
Some services may be delivered virtually, including to other Correctional Health Centres in the Province if needed.
Remain informed on developments concerning the medical condition of patients in cooperation with all other health providers in the Centre.
Identify opportunities for improvement in policies and practices and for tabling specific proposals that will result in increased efficiency in the provision of health care to patients.
Provide guidance and direction regarding health care matters to the Centre’s Health Services staff.
Provide professional advice to the Centres’ medical leadership regarding health care policy.
Participate in committee work relating to health care service matters as reasonably required and supported by Correctional Health Services.
Provide information to fatality inquiries as required.
Qualifications and Required Attributes:
The successful applicant must hold an MD, or equivalent, and shall have or be eligible for certification in Family Medicine with the Canadian College of Family Physicians and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Physicians with previous Correctional Health Services experience is an asset, however not required.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
The practitioner will be required to obtain and maintain a Medical Staff Appointment.
Reporting Relationship:
The practitioner will report to the Facilities Medical Director, Primary Care, Correctional Health Services.

Start November 1, 2025
Remuneration:
Remuneration is based on a competitive sessional stipend.
