Join Recovery Alberta to deliver on its promise of accessible, sustainable addiction, mental health, and correctional health services as Senior Medical Director, Addiction Treatment and Compassionate Intervention. The Senior Medical Director (SMD), Addiction Treatment and Compassionate Intervention will provide expert leadership and strategic vision to Recovery Alberta’s bed-based addiction and detoxification treatment services, opioid dependency programs, safe consumption initiatives, harm reduction services, and involuntary addiction treatment programs/facilities. The SMD ensures services are effectively aligned with the strategic direction of Recovery Alberta and the policy direction of the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, including the Alberta Recovery Model.

This 0.6-0.8FTE position is provincial so the physical work location is negotiable within Alberta.
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
The SMD is responsible and accountable to provide strategic and operational leadership for integrated recovery-oriented addiction services across Recovery Alberta’s facilities and programs, including leading the design, development, and implementation of effective and efficient integrated involuntary addiction services across the province. This includes:
Develop and maintain a strategic framework for addiction services and programs that supports operational goals in alignment with patient and family focused centred care and the Alberta Recovery Oriented System of Care Model.
Develop and maintain a provincial framework for addiction services and program delivery.
Lead and/or support physician workforce planning, recruitment/retention, and ensure appropriate clinical coverage for Addiction Treatment and Compassionate Intervention.
Sustainably manage financial, physical, and human resources.
Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services, standards of practice, and best practices with a view to continuous improvement.
Provide leadership in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards, such as the Mental Health Services Protection Act Regulations and Compassionate Intervention legislation.
Provide meaningful opportunities for internal and external stakeholder engagement and consultation in respect of Addiction Treatment and Compassionate Intervention programs and services.
Qualifications and Required Attributes:
The successful applicants must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada, or an equivalent professional body; obtain and maintain a Medical Staff Appointment; and have at least 5 years leading clinical services, with 3 years in senior leadership roles in diverse clinical settings.
Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Addiction Medicine and/or a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine by College of Family Physicians of Canada and/or Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine certification or equivalent is preferred.
In addition, preferred qualifications include:
Proven ability to develop and execute long-term organizational strategies and initiatives, with a focus on achieving measurable goals.
Experience in leading change management and driving innovation to improve service delivery and outcomes.
Demonstrated success in developing medical leaders and leading quality improvement initiatives to address complex healthcare challenges.
Strong interpersonal and public relations skills, with a track record of influencing, negotiating, and managing relationships to achieve organizational goals.
Credentialled as a Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE).
Experience in provision of treatment of addiction, mental health, and/or correctional health services.
