The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCNS) (http://www.ucalgary.ca/dcns/) in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invites applications for a General Neurologist to join a large clinical and academic neurology group. Calgary is a large, cosmopolitan city just one hour from the Rocky Mountains, offering both a dynamic urban life with great restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, and access to some of the world’s most beautiful national parks just an hour from the city.
The DCNS represents a hub of world class research in neurosciences, outstanding clinical programs, and a diverse, dynamic, and collegial group of neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, and neuroscientists, who collaborate daily with one another and with our close colleagues in neuroradiology and neuropathology. The Department of Clinical Neurosciences and Division of Neurology are committed to fostering diversity through cultivating an environment where people with a variety of backgrounds, genders, interests and talents feel welcome and included. We are seeking a Neurologist who will deliver high quality care to patients with neurological problems in both ambulatory and inpatient neurology and consultation services. Participation in Division and Department academic activities including quality improvement rounds, grand rounds, business meetings, and educational work is an expectation of the role.
Overarching Description:
This role involves leading the general neurology clinics, working to assure quality of care in the programs and to optimize access and patient flow using available resources in general neurology. Remuneration for this position will be at 0.1 FTE (25,650/annum) for a term of 3 years (renewable X 2). This position reports to the Deputy Division Head, Neurology.
The successful applicant will build strategies to create a culture of programmatic pride and collegiality to ensure that GNC is a community of practitioners with a common goal and values in the care of neurology patients. *Note that the role of overseeing Central Access and Triage is NOT a part of this leadership position, but that the leader of GNC will be expected to contribute to triaging in some capacity.
This position is open to members who have an AHS appointment in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences only.
Accountabilities:
1. Team meetings
a. Lead program meetings with physicians and the rest of the program team regularly (minimum every 3-4 months).
b. Provide feedback to members who do not reliably participate in core program activities.
c. Work with program admin to ensure meeting minutes are produced and circulated.
2. Strategic Planning
a. Perform monthly monitoring of GNC referral patterns, access, and wait time by urgency via the Ambulatory Neurology Referral Dashboard.
b. Develop a strategic vision and goals for their term as leader. These should be developed to align with the Divisional and Departmental strategic vision and that of AHS and with the collaboration of members of this program. This should include targets and strategies to achieve reasonable wait times for referrals to the program.
c. Meet individually with program members annually to review their concerns/satisfaction/goals and consider succession planning.
3. Collaboration with operational leaders
a. Attend monthly meetings with operational counterparts in AHS (includes the GNC managers from SHC, FMC, RGH and PLC). This discussion occurs as a standing agenda on the Calgary Zone Ambulatory Manager Meeting which occurs monthly.
b. Communicate with operational leaders around changes to space utilization and clinic days to ensure optimal efficiency of space utilization for all programs.
4. Communication within the Division and Department
a. Update and disseminate referral criteria for the program to NCAT physician lead annually
b. Work with operational managers to ensure the Alberta Referral Directory is updated on an annual, and as needed basis.
c. Attend Medical Director meetings to hear updates from AHS/UofC and share challenges/updates/changes with the group
d. Attend Division and site meetings to ensure needed information and updates are circulated to all members of your program.
e. Share concerns with Division head as needed.
5. Triage and patient flow
a. Review (or delegate review) of updates to referrals already triaged, pending appointment on GNC waitlist, with re-triage as needed.
b. Ensure that there are clear triage criteria for the program
c. Monitor and manage waitlist with a shared goal for routine referrals patients to be seen within the timelines set out in the strategic goals.
d. Contribute to NCAT Triaging and address triaging questions from triagers
e. Bring NCAT triaging complaints forward to Deputy Division head
6. Education
a. Ensure that the program provides some educational opportunity for fellow division members, allied health members, and members of the program on a regular basis: journal club within subspecialties, CPD/CME opportunities by subspecialty members for the Division at least annually.
b. Assist the residency program by updating learning rotation objectives are updated and met for rotating residents (generally once/year or less).
c. Provide educational opportunities for learners where requested.
7. Performance management within the program
a. Address performance issues with clerical/nursing support through collaboration with appropriate managers
b. Address performance concerns for program physicians with those physicians and the Division Head as needed.
Other Program Specific Responsibilities:
Specialist Link Physician Lead
· Review specialist link schedule developed by administrative team on a 6-month basis.
· Respond to concerns from specialist link team regarding processes/ staff behavior.
a. The Medical Director will coordinate communication, policy change, patient flow, patient concerns, quality improvement initiatives, and collection of patient experience data for the program. This will require a high degree of responsiveness and timely completion of tasks and responses to inquiries from program team members, admin leaders, division/departmental leadership etc.
b. The Medical Director will take initiative to proactively identify opportunities for innovation and quality improvement in the program
c. The Medical Director will initiate and lead, or delegate and oversee to completion, projects to drive excellence in the program.
2. Communication Skills
a. The Medical Director will develop collaborative relationships with all members of the program team and work productively and professionally with administrative, operational, and medical staff involved in the program.
b. Medical Director will understand the organizational structures and reporting structures within AHS such that changes to workflow impacting non-physician team members are undertaken only in collaboration with appropriate manager/administrative lead (recognizing that Allied Health, and RN/clerical staff do not have the same reporting structures).
c. The leader will be approachable such that members of the team who have innovative ideas or concerns about aspects of the program feel empowered to come and speak with the program lead to work on strategies for implementation and improvement where appropriate.
d. The leader will effectively manage conflict amongst clinician team members and know when to access administrative leaders to address conflict amongst staff in the program.

Qualifications include an MD, a specialist certificate in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. We require a neurologist who has demonstrated a record of success in an academic environment, proven clinical excellence, a record of working well within a team, demonstrated organizational, leadership, collaboration and teaching skills are required. Additional training in sleep neurology would be an asset.
The ability to participate fully in the Calgary City-Wide call schedule is required. Must read, write and speak English. All qualified candidates are encourage to apply; however, Canadians and Permanent Residents will be given priority.
