This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced family physician to take on a high-impact leadership role in Alberta’s largest community-focused medical section. As the Acute Care Community Primary Care Section Chief within the Calgary Zone, you’ll guide over 180 physicians delivering care across diverse Alberta Health Services (AHS) facilities, from Day Medicine and specialized outpatient clinics to surgical assisting and extender services in acute care.
You’ll provide strategic and clinical leadership, ensuring credentialing processes are upheld, patient concerns are addressed with care, and medical standards remain exemplary. You’ll work closely with operational teams on planning initiatives, spearhead continuing medical education efforts, and shape physician engagement strategies. In the absence of site-specific leads, your influence stretches across the system, helping to ensure seamless 24/7 care in multiple clinical environments.
Your collaborative relationships with community agencies and AHS departments will be key, as will your active participation in executive and planning committees. If you’re passionate about elevating community and acute care integration, building strong teams, and leading with purpose, this role places you at the heart of innovation and improvement in Calgary’s health system.
The Community Section is the largest section for physicians in the Department of Family Medicine overseeing roughly 180 family physicians with an active medical staff appointment and clinical privileges within AHS facilities. This leadership position is unique in that there are no site leads in any of the acute care facilities. The Section Chief provides essential leadership and direction to the members of the section, ensuring members adherence to set standards, policies, and clinical work competencies and AHS bylaws. This is accomplished through completing regular periodic reviews of the members within the community section.
We’re passionate about what we do. Our team of skilled and dedicated health care professionals, support staff, and physicians promote wellness and provide health care every day, across the Calgary Zone. We are an equal opportunity employer. AHS values the diversity of the people and communities we serve and is committed to attracting, engaging, and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Successful applicants will bring confident leadership, strategic insight, and a strong commitment to patient care. Key skills include communication, conflict resolution, team-building, and familiarity with AHS Calgary Zone operations. Physicians passionate about education, research, or advancing community-based models will thrive in this role, which offers a meaningful opportunity to influence care delivery across Alberta’s largest primary care section.
