The Community Primary Care Section Chief will provide leadership and support to family physicians who are members of the Alberta Health Services Medical Staff in the Community Category within the Community Primary Care Section of Department of Family Medicine (DFM) in the Calgary Zone. This role is primarily a Medical Lead advisory role which is unique in that it oversees Community physicians with affiliations with the DFM and who work in AHS and affiliated clinics that ensure the needs of underrepresented populations are met (including Alex, CUPS, Elbow River Healing Lodge, and East Calgary Family Care Centre). This role is also involved in zone related primary care process improvement and works collaboratively with the Zone Primary Care Networks.
Accountabilities include:
1. Collaborate and coordinate with the Medical Director for Primary Care, work with the medical leadership of Primary Care Networks and other AHS agencies in Calgary to promote and develop Primary Care.
2. Involvement in the Departmental Continuing Medical Education (CME) Planning Committee
3. Collaboration with other Departments within Alberta Health Services
4. Support the Department of Family Medicine in developing and maintaining a communication strategy for family physicians in the City of Calgary
5. Participate as an AHS Medical Leader in Primary Care activities such as:
• Specialty/Primary care collaboration including local and provincial pathway development.
• Quality Referral Evolution (QuRE)
• Alberta Find a Doctor Committee
• Alberta Surgical Initiative
• Alberta FAST (Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment)
Committee Membership may include but is not limited to:
1. DFM Clinical Executive Committee
2. DFM Communications Committee
3. DFM Medicine Mackid Planning Committee
4. DFM Family Physician and Specialist Physician of the Year Award Committee
5. Alberta Lab Steering Committee
6. Provincial Pathways Unit
Collaborative Relationships:
1. Acute Care Community Primary Care Section Chief
2. Calgary Zone Primary Care Medical Leadership
Others as determined by Department needs
The Community Section is the largest section for physicians in the Department of Family Medicine overseeing 376 family physicians with a community medical staff appointment (no AHS privileges) as well as 29 additional physicians who do have an Active Medical Staff appointment with AHS and affiliated clinics that ensure the needs of underrepresented populations are met\. The Community Section Chief provides essential leadership and direction to the members of the section, ensuring members adherence to set standards, policies, and clinical work competencies and AHS bylaws.

Qualifications:
Qualified physicians will have completed the conjoint Family Medicine residency or equivalent education or will have acquired several years of experience as a family physician, and will be eligible for a Medical Staff appointment with Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone.
The ideal candidate will have:
· Be at least 5 years in practice and currently practicing Family Medicine
· Practicing in Community Primary Care (potentially in a clinic affiliated with AHS such as CUPs, The Alex
etc.)
· Be a member or soon to become a member of a PCN
· Be a member of the College of Family Physicians of Alberta
· Current licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
· Have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, analytics, strategic
thinking/influence and a passion for quality and patient care
· Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to effectively develop and lead teams
· Demonstrated successful interpersonal and communication skills
· Proven organizational skills
· Knowledge of Calgary Zone Primary Care-structure, governance, clinical and operational departments
· An interest in research or education or leadership in Community Primary Care would be an asset
The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
