The Department of Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services – Calgary Zone invites applications for a full-time subspecialist in Geriatric Medicine to lead the Division/Section of Geriatric Medicine, and AHS Specialized Geriatric Services and Transition Services (SGS/TS). The position is accountable to provide effective leadership and scholarly support for patient care, quality improvement (QI), research, and education within the Division/Section and Calgary Zone.

The role requires a commitment to the Section for Geriatric Medicine and SGS/TS over other activities and responsibilities. A suitable candidate will offer a vision for developing and implementing innovative clinical services focused on improving the care for the growing population of older patients with complex medical comorbidities, as well as enhancing the Research, Medical Education and QI mandate of the Division.

Essential qualities include strong communication skills and a consistent display of professionalism.  Skills in team building, collaboration, mentorship and conflict resolution are assets. Applicants should have an established reputation of committed departmental and divisional citizenship. The successful candidate will be expected to lead in the promotion of equity and diversity within the Division.

As AHS SGS/TS Medical Director, the successful candidate will work in a dyad relationship with the Director of Transition Services and Specialized Geriatrics Services. The Medical Director will participate in determining the strategic direction and implementation to support clinical programs, working with system partners. The Medical Director will support operations of programs including physician workforce management. They will contribute to zone policy development and implementation of best practices in geriatrics and transitions of care

Qualifications include:

• MD, FRCPC (Internal Medicine) and RCPSC subspeciality (Geriatric Medicine)

• Eligibility for specialist licensure in the province of Alberta

• Established reputation for clinical excellence as a consultant Geriatrician

• Strategic thinker with medical administrative and leadership experience

 The successful candidate should have evidence of strong clinical acumen, leadership and scholarly productivity in the areas of research, medical education, QI/safety and/or health policy. A successful track record in teaching and/or medical education is desirable.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
