Description: 

Recovery Alberta invites applications for the role of Zone Clinical Department Facility Chief, Addiction and Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (GRH). 


This 0.10 FTE position governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, reports to the Zone Clinical Section Chief, Child Adolescent Psychiatry, Facility Medical Director, RAH, and Facility Medical Director, GRH. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that standards of care are being met in the Department and that support for research and teaching is available. 


The specific roles and responsibilities of Facility Site Chief for Royal Alexandra Hospital and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital are multifaceted, involving components of leadership, operational oversight, clinical management, strong communication, and administrative functions. There is a Recovery Alberta emphasis on access and outcomes. This role will work closely the dyad program manager and in conjunction with unit managers (for inpatients, day programs, and clinics). 


Key responsibilities include: 

  • Collaborative strategic planning and program development: Identifying gaps in services and introducing initiatives to improve patient care at the RAH and GRH, in alignment with Recovery Alberta priorities and the Zone Clinical Section Chief, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. This includes visioning forward for integrated services with the STO, RAH, GRH, community, and provincial rural zones.
    Building a healthy and thriving workplace culture: Leading within a dyad model a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals while fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment that is just, equitable, diverse and inclusive.
  • Regular communication and transparent decision-making routine: Maintaining clear communication between staff members, chairing and facilitating regular meetings, and ensuring that medical staff are consulted and informed on relevant policies, changes, and expectations.
    Establishing clear conflict resolution processes: Addressing conflicts between staff or between staff and patients, ensuring the resolution is aligned with organizational policies and the safety of all parties involved.
  • Quality Leadership:
    • Ensuring that the psychiatric program runs smoothly, including acute on-call, managing day-to-day operations, ensuring services are delivered efficiently, and maintaining high standards of care.
    • Ensuring that all patients receive appropriate psychiatric care, working with managers and staff to address patient needs and improve treatment outcomes.
    • Collaborating with clinicians, managers, and the Deputy Zone Clinical Department Head in quality assurance to develop and to implement practices to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff.
    • Responsible for initial investigation of patient complaints originating on site which concern physician behaviour or physician practice.
    • Responding to urgent matters and emergencies involving patients, staff, or the facility, ensuring that effective emergency procedures are in place and followed.
    • Promoting continuing education and training for staff, keeping them updated on the latest developments in psychiatric care, treatment methodologies, and best practices.
  • Physician workforce planning, recruitment and development: Supporting excellent processes in hiring, privileging, distribution of workload, physician peer review and performance appraisal. Fostering leadership and personal development opportunities.
  • Strategic partnerships and collaborator: Working effectively with leaders across Recovery Alberta and Alberta Health Services, within and among sites, including the STO, and rural zones. Acting as an ambassador to external stakeholders, including family members, community and government organizations, and healthcare partners. Advocating for the needs of patients and the psychiatric program within the larger healthcare system, securing resources, and promoting public awareness of mental health issues.
  • Academic Liaison: Collaborate with the academic Department of Psychiatry to support resident and medical student orientation, development and teaching.

 

The position has an expected start date of approximately April 1st, 2025 and an expected term of 1 year.

 

Qualifications:

 

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and a passion for quality and patient safety.  They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and is considered a strong clinician by peers. 

 

The successful candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, have demonstrated supervisory experience and be an excellent clinician with the respect of his/her peers.  The successful candidate also will be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of the Department of Psychiatry. 

 

Candidates must be Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certified in Psychiatry and preferably certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry subspecialty, be eligible to work in Canada, and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff.  Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
